This presentation will cover charitable organization governance issues and the duties of and risks to lawyers (and other individuals) who serve as board members on charitable organization boards as well as the ethical issues that arise in doing so.

The learning objectives of this presentation will be to educate lawyers as to the duties and responsibilities that are particular to charitable organization boards and the additional risks to lawyers due to their perceived knowledge of charitable organization laws and tax responsibilities.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Shannon G. Guthrie is a graduate of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.  After living out of state for almost 10 years, she returned to practice law in her home town of Dallas where she was born.  She is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel where she serves on the Charitable Organizations and Business Entities Committees and also serves as a Board Member of the ACTEC Foundation.  She is a past Council Member of the Real Estate Probate and Trust Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and served as member and later Chair of the Trust Code Committee of REPTL.  She also currently Co-Chairs REPTL’s Leadership Academy.  She is the current President of T-REP, which is the more recently established Texas Real Estate & Probate Institute that serves to lobby for and vet legislation affecting the real estate, probate and trust law areas of practice in Texas.  She is also a frequent writer and speaker for the State Bar of Texas and other organizations, and she is an adjunct Professor at the 29th ranked Texas A&M Law School in Fort Worth where she teaches Estate & Gift Tax Law.  She has offices in Dallas and Southlake, but spends her nights in Southlake where she has reared her 3 now adult children, Devin, Nathan and Chloe, and where she shares her life with her husband Jeff Casey.

Parking
Parking is available in the attached Chase Bank Tower garage. Entrances to the garage are on 5th and Colorado. We will provide parking validations at the conclusion of the event. Upon etnering the Chase Bank Tower building, make your way to the 21st Floor. Carpooling is highly encouraged.
